free mp3: how do you replace an after market car stereo thats hardwired?

Question by : how do you replace an after car ?
Car: 1985 380SL

Its equipped with an aftermarket Pioneer stereo from 1996(tape player) – From the looks of it in the back it seems as if it is hardwired….

I bought a new Pioneer stereo and I’m trying to hook it up. Obviously there is no wiring harness for this application, since the stereo thats in there right now is hardwired. What do you think will be the best way to go about this install?

When the original owner installed the Pioneer deck, there may not have been any easy installation kits available for it. So, the original radio connector was cut off and the Pioneer deck power, speaker and power antenna leads were simply spliced and soldered to the appropriate factory leads ….this is how it was done before all these “plug and play” adapter kits came out. If the installer was good then maybe the lead was wrapped in some OEM-style wire wrap or electrical tape.

You are going to have to do some research and find out what leads are what; what leads are for the speakers (and which particular speaker), which one is power and ground and which one powers the antenna if it has a retractable power antenna. The best way to do this would be to find a schematic (wiring diagram) of your ’85 Mercedes. Power should be easy as it is usually a red lead coming off the deck. Likewise finding the ground lead; typically these are black coming off the deck. That leaves potentially up to four speaker leads …which may have just one lead per speaker (as each speaker is grounded to the chassis) or two leads per speaker as the ground is through the deck.

It is a challenge but with a diagram, a multimeter and some patience you should be able to figure it out. If your lucky, maybe the leads off the Pioneer deck are still labeled.

I’d recommend looking up the model number of the currently installed Pioneer and see if the wiring conforms to the standard CEA color code.

    12V+ Constant – Yellow
    12V+ Switched – Red
Ground – Black (sometimes with a terminal attached)
Power Antenna – Blue (sometimes with a terminal attached)
Remote – Blue/White (sometimes with a terminal attached)
Left Front Speaker Positive – White
Left Front Speaker Negative – White/Black
Right Front Speaker Positive – Gray
Right Front Speaker Negative – Gray/Black
Left Rear Speaker Positive – Green
Left Rear Speaker Negative – Green/Black
Right Rear Speaker Positive – Violet
Right Rear Speaker Negative – Violet/Black

There may be other wires such as an “orange” wire for illumination.
